Hormones

Hormones can cause acne when you’re in your teenage years of course, and it’s never fun to have those raging hormones.  But when you’re an adult, it seems to be worse, especially in women who tend to have more hormonal outbreaks between periods, menopause, and pregnancy among others.  Frankly, though testosterone causes more acne obviously, those fluctuating levels of estrogen can also cause acne.  During your monthly cycle for example, levels of estrogen are actually actively doubled.  Now obviously birth control can help to control those hormones and therefore help to treat acne.  But I’ve seen a few women who can’t take birth control pills for a number of highly valid reasons.  So when you know that time is coming, just step up your normal skincare routine.  Reduce your stress if you can, and just make sure that you are paying extra attention in general to your skin.  All of this will help you to achieve greater results in general and keep the dermatologist away.  If you have an extra strong acne medication, it can be applied only during those times for that extra kick you need, and there are also hormone suppressors that doctors can give you.  But of course, if you don’t have to, I wouldn’t necessarily suggest it.
