I was talking to a friend the other day, and honestly, you never realize the things people think until they say it, and usually it’s not until you’ve gotten past it. For example, in this case, he was imitating a guy that we both know, that we all knew in fact, and the minute he started talking, everybody knew exactly who it was supposed to be. The voice wasn’t right on, but so many people have distinctive innotations that they use, and this is one of them. Granted, we’ve joked about him before, just the things he used to say and otherwise. But to his face, nobody says anything unless he’s already stopped doing it. Likewise, I’m pretty sure people do that with acne. They certainly do it with weight loss. I mean most people have the good sense to say oh you lost weight. But there are some who will say something like you’re not fat anymore. I’ve actually seen someone say something to the extent of you don’t have bad acne anymore. In their case, that was actually a genuine compliment. It just didn’t come out quite right. But to some degree, you have to wonder what people hold back.
