Does Milk Cause Acne?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Milk has been used in many capacities.  You see the commercials.  They talk about how drinking milk helps people to lose weight.  What they don’t tell you is that drinking a certain amount of skim milk helps you to lose weight, and should you drink more than that, it leads to weight gain and greater obesity just like any other food due to the calories.

So where do we go from there?  They also say that if you drink a little bit of milk, it’s okay even if you’re allergic.  Apparently, it won’t do that much damage even if allergic.  What are they nuts?  Anyway, this is all beside the point, the point being that milk has been known to contribute to acne breakouts.  So is this all true?

Well, there are many theories as to why this happens, the most common being that cows are injected with hormones that then seep into the milk.  This isn’t an uncommon thought by any means, nor is it untrue.  Milk in general tends to have a number of hormones.  So allergic or not, milk can contribute to greater acne breakouts.

But in addition to that, there’s the fact that for some reason, many people seem to have a greater sensitivity to milk and dairy products than we know.  Yes, not everybody is allergic.  But lactose intolerance and even slight reactions are more common than one might think, therefore leading the skin to manifest these issues in the form of acne.

So if you are wondering why chocolate is so notorious for contributing to acne even though they talk about all of the antioxidant and other benefits of chocolate itself, it’s because of all of the milk and sugar I might note added to chocolate.  And while there is no known cause of acne, milk is certainly a contributor.
